Rhett Smith is 2U’s executive vice president, head of engineering. He provides technical leadership in all aspects of the business and ensures technologies are developed and used efficiently, profitably, and securely.
Smith initially joined 2U in 2020 as senior vice president, degrees technology, bringing over 25 years of experience leading technology transformation across edtech, biotech, and fintech.
As chief technology officer at AllHere, Smith transformed its intervention management system into a dynamic, interactive platform for scaling real-time student support services. As chief architect at McGraw-Hill, he transformed its disparate learning management technologies into one unifying platform and transformed its product delivery pipelines into an automated framework. And as senior vice president of engineering at Engrade, Smith transformed the company from an online gradebook to an ecosystem of educational products from Pearson and more.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from Tufts University. He lives in New York City where he enjoys time with his three children, running, hiking, reading, and making music.
