July 17, 2025 — The Women’s Football Alliance (WFA), the largest, longest-running, and most competitive women’s tackle football league in the world, is proud to announce a groundbreaking partnership with edX, the global online learning platform from 2U. This collaboration is a first-of-its-kind in women’s football, and aims to deliver curated educational opportunities to WFA athletes, equipping them with the skills and tools needed to succeed both on and off the field.

Through this partnership, the WFA and edX are using the power of education to unlock opportunity and help league players thrive in every aspect of their lives.

"Our Mission and Vision with the WFA is always to 'Change Women's Lives' by having a very positive impact on the Lives of our Women who play and coach in our WFA,” said Terry Smith, President of the Women's Football Alliance. “edX is the most outstanding education company in the world, and so at the WFA, when we set our minds on creating incredible educational opportunities to improve our women's lives, then we chose to partner with the very best."

By teaming up with edX, the WFA is reinforcing its mission to be more than just a league; it’s about creating the next generation of women leaders.

"Our partnership with the Women's Football Alliance represents exactly the kind of innovative collaboration that drives meaningful impact," said Andy Morgan, Chief Partnerships Officer for 2U. "By combining the WFA's commitment to developing elite female athletes with the world-class educational offerings on edX, we're creating pathways for them to excel not just in football, but in their careers and communities. It's partnerships like these that demonstrate how education can truly transform lives and open doors to new opportunities."

As part of this initiative, all WFA Pro League athletes will receive complimentary enrollment in a variety of educational offerings on edX, including professional certificate courses in “Leadership and Communication” and “Storytelling for Aspiring Entrepreneurs.” These courses will equip athletes with essential skills in public speaking and personal storytelling, which are key components for building personal brands and maximizing NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) opportunities.

“At the WFA, we believe our league should be a platform for growth, leadership, and long-term success,” said Lisa King, WFA Commissioner. “This partnership with edX allows us to invest in our athletes holistically, giving them the tools they need to succeed far beyond the game.”

In addition, WFA athletes will gain unlimited access to a curated catalog of online courses on edX focused on career development and lifelong success across a variety of topics through five key pathways, including:

  • Entrepreneurship: Courses in business fundamentals, startup development, and financial literacy.
  • Women in Leadership: Topics such as strategic decision-making, team management, and personal branding.
  • Public Speaking: Workshops on speech writing, confidence-building, and effective communication for media and live audiences.
  • Personal Finance: Lessons in budgeting, saving, investing, and managing income for long-term financial stability.
  • NIL Optimization: Skill-building in public speaking, social media strategy, and content creation.

All offerings are designed with the working professional in mind, giving all 3,000 of the athletes and coaches in the WFA the flexibility to learn on their own schedule, while still receiving a high-quality education that reflects the standards of top global universities. The value of the services and education being provided by the WFA through this partnership is $1.4 million, all being invested directly into WFA athletes and coaches, reflecting the league’s unwavering commitment to creating meaningful educational opportunities and driving long-term impact for every woman in the league.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to access top-level courses through edX to expand my education and gain the tools to become a successful entrepreneur,” said Sonfre Roberson, a player for the Cali War WFA team located in Los Angeles. “As an athlete, I’m always striving to grow; not just on the field, but off it as well. It means a lot to know that the WFA is investing in our futures and helping us build long-term careers beyond football.”

With this initiative, edX and the WFA are setting a new standard for athlete development, ensuring that every player has access to the educational support needed to thrive during and after their athletic careers.
